Increase in fees for research activities by Anna University

Situated in Guindy in Chennai, Anna University or AU is one of highly popular educational institutes in India. In this AU many research activities in various departments have been going since many years are known.
It is now brought out that this Anna University has increased the fees for the research activities and these included synopsis submission, late submission of thesis, institute recognition and renewal by more than 20 % to 100 % with immediate effect. The sources have pointed out that the main aim of AU was to generate revenue for conducting research evaluation and inviting experts in doctoral communities. The important piece of news is there are around 13,000 PhD scholars involved in the research activities at the famous AU and in many affiliated colleges belonging to AU.
A circular was issued by the Centre for Research in Anna University and as per the circular it is clear that fees for synopsis admission has been increased from Rs 6500 to Rs 8000 and for late submission of thesis from Rs 5000 to Rs 7500. In the past the fees for resubmission of thesis was Rs 10,000 and now this has been increased to Rs 12,000. It must be noted that earlier for deferring the viva the students had to pay Rs 16500.The supervisor recognition fee has been doubled to Rs 2000 now.
From an amount of just Rs 500, the fee for the change of category has been increased to Rs 2500 now. A principal belonging to Chennai city based college expressed his thoughts and spoke about how a majority of research scholars were faculty members in private engineering colleges and they are doing PhD as part time now.
He pointed out that these research scholars received low amount as salary and increase in the fees would be a huge issue for them. It is worthy to note that if doing PhD becomes expensive then the faculty members would not be able to complete their research activities. This was confirmed by another principal. The important point is the quality of engineering education would get affected by this increase in the fees.
