Chennai Power Demand Hits Record High of 5,008 MW Amid Intense Summer Heat

Chennai has recorded its highest-ever electricity demand, with power consumption touching a historic 5,008 megawatts (MW), setting a new benchmark in the city`s energy usage history.

The surge in electricity demand is primarily attributed to the intense summer heat, which has led to increased use of air conditioners, air coolers, and electric fans across households, offices, and commercial establishments.

With this achievement, Chennai has emerged as the second-highest power-consuming metropolitan city in India after Delhi, where peak power demand recently reached 8,656 MW.

The latest demand of 5,008 MW has surpassed Chennai`s previous record of 4,809 MW, which was registered on May 21, 2026. The new milestone highlights the growing energy requirements of the rapidly expanding metropolitan city.

Despite the Tamil Nadu power utility successfully meeting the record demand, residents in several parts of Chennai have reported frequent power outages, especially during night hours. In some localities, electricity disruptions have reportedly lasted for more than five hours, causing inconvenience to residents.

The prolonged power cuts have triggered protests in certain areas, with residents gathering on major roads during late-night hours demanding uninterrupted electricity supply.

Experts believe that power demand may continue to remain high in the coming weeks if hot weather conditions persist across Chennai and its suburbs.
