A major disruption in medicine availability is expected across Tamil Nadu as pharmacists and medical shop owners have announced participation in a nationwide strike against online medicine sales on May 20, 2026.

The protest has been called by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), which has announced a one-day nationwide shutdown involving more than 12.5 lakh pharmacies across India.

42,000 Medical Shops May Remain Closed in Tamil Nadu

Due to the strike announcement, nearly 42,000 pharmacies across Tamil Nadu are expected to remain closed on Wednesday. The protest is likely to affect medicine purchases and emergency access to drugs for the public.

People have urged the Government of Tamil Nadu to take precautionary measures to handle possible inconvenience caused by the medical shop shutdown.

Why Are Pharmacists Protesting?

Pharmacists and medical shop owners are opposing online medicine sales and demanding a ban on e-pharmacy operations in India.

According to AIOCD, medicines are allegedly being sold online without proper prescription verification and regulatory checks. The association claims that painkillers, sleeping tablets, and abortion medicines are easily available through online platforms without valid doctor prescriptions.

The organization has also demanded that the Union Government immediately withdraw the temporary e-pharmacy regulations introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Concerns Over Online Medicine Sales

Medical shop owners argue that:

- Online pharmacies bypass prescription verification
- Unregulated medicine sales may pose health risks
- Misuse of restricted medicines is increasing
- Traditional pharmacies are facing business losses

The nationwide protest is expected to impact medicine distribution and retail pharmaceutical services in several states, including Tamil Nadu.

Patients requiring regular medication are advised to purchase essential medicines in advance to avoid inconvenience during the one-day strike.
