Chennai Corporation Makes Online Registration Mandatory for Bulk Waste Generators Under SWM Rules 2026

The Greater Chennai Corporation has announced that all bulk waste generators must complete mandatory online registration under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026. The new regulations came into effect on April 1, 2026, following the Government of India’s official notification issued on January 28, 2026.

Buildings with a total area of 20,000 square meters or more, establishments using over 40,000 liters of water per day, or entities generating 100 kilograms or more of solid waste daily are categorized as bulk waste generators. This includes commercial establishments, residential associations, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, IT parks, marriage halls, markets, factories, and other large organizations.

Eligible institutions within Chennai Corporation limits must register online within 15 days of receiving notice from zonal officials. Authorities warned that action will be taken against those who fail to comply within the stipulated time.

Bulk waste generators are also instructed to segregate waste properly, procure necessary waste bins, and hand over waste only to the Greater Chennai Corporation or authorized agencies. Organic waste generated on-site must be processed through composting or bio-gas methods within their premises.
