Chennai Corporation Clears 15,710 Metric Tonnes of Construction Waste in Just Two Weeks

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has removed 15,710 metric tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste across the city between May 27 and June 9, 2026, as part of its intensified solid waste management and city cleanliness drive.

According to the Corporation, special measures have been implemented to prevent the illegal dumping of construction debris in public places, roads, residential areas, water bodies, bridges, bus stops, and other common spaces. Dedicated vehicles are being used to collect, transport, and send the waste to authorized recycling and processing facilities at Kodungaiyur and Perungudi.

Under the existing guidelines, the Corporation removes construction and demolition waste of up to one metric tonne free of cost. For waste exceeding one metric tonne, builders and property owners must transport the debris to processing centres and pay a processing fee of ₹800 per metric tonne.

Officials said that since the implementation of the scheme, 321.39 metric tonnes of C&D waste have been received from the public and construction agencies for scientific processing. A total of ₹2.57 lakh has also been collected as processing charges.

The Corporation has taken strict action against illegal dumping and imposed ₹16.08 lakh in fines on 338 violators who dumped construction waste in public places and water bodies without permission.

Civic officials stated that these efforts have significantly contributed to improving urban cleanliness, protecting water bodies, reducing air pollution, and promoting sustainable waste management in Chennai.
