Egmore Redevelopment Impacts Suburban Trains; Metro Sees Ridership Surge
Ongoing redevelopment works at Chennai Egmore railway station have led to a temporary reduction in suburban train services, affecting daily commuters across the city. Suburban operations have been cut from 204 services to 160 until April 5, resulting in delays and overcrowding during peak hours.
With fewer suburban trains available, many passengers have shifted to the Chennai Metro Rail Limited network. As a result, daily Metro ridership has surged to 3.99 lakh, up from the usual 3.6–3.7 lakh range.
Metro stations at Central, Guindy and Airport have recorded a significant increase in footfall, reflecting the growing reliance on Metro services amid the suburban rail disruptions. Officials expect passenger volumes to remain high until full suburban services resume.
