The confidence vote conducted in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly to prove the government’s majority was telecast live for the first time, marking a significant political development in the state.

The trust vote was moved by the government led by Chief Minister Vijay of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The live broadcast of the proceedings attracted major public and political attention across Tamil Nadu.

Majority Mark in Assembly

At present, the Tamil Nadu Assembly has 232 members, which means the ruling government requires the support of at least 116 MLAs to prove its majority during the confidence vote.

Political developments ahead of the trust vote have reduced the effective strength of the House:

- Trichy East MLA Vijay resigned from his position

- Sivaganga district Tirupathur MLA Srinivasa Sethupathi was barred by court order from participating in the trust vote

- J.D. Prabhakar has been appointed as the new Speaker of the Assembly

Due to these developments, the ruling side’s effective voting strength currently stands at 105 votes.

Support from Breakaway AIADMK Group

In a major boost to the ruling government, a faction that split from the AIADMK under the leadership of C.V. Shanmugam has reportedly extended support to Vivek during the trust vote.

In addition, expelled AMMK MLA Samraj has also announced support for the government, increasing the chances of the Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government securing the required majority in the Assembly.

The trust vote proceedings are being closely watched as they are expected to play a crucial role in determining the political stability of the current government.
