Several parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms due to an upper-air cyclonic circulation prevailing over the Gulf of Mannar and nearby regions. According to the Chennai Meteorological Centre, the rain activity is expected to continue for the next few days across multiple districts in the state.

On Wednesday, widespread rainfall was recorded in many areas of Tamil Nadu. The districts of Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari experienced moderate to heavy rain along with thunder and lightning. Rainfall was also reported in several northern districts and suburban parts of Chennai.

Even with the rainfall, temperatures remained above normal in many areas. Karur, Erode, Vellore, and Madurai districts recorded temperatures close to 102 degrees Fahrenheit, with daytime heat continuing to affect residents.

The Regional Meteorological Centre explained that an upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently positioned over the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining areas at an altitude of around 1.5 kilometres above sea level. In addition, a trough extends from north interior Karnataka to the Gulf of Mannar through Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu at a height of nearly 0.9 kilometres.

Due to these weather systems, the Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall in several districts from today until May 11. The districts likely to receive rain during this period include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Madurai, Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, and Kanniyakumari.

The weather department further stated that on May 12, rain with thunderstorms is likely in Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Pudukkottai districts.

Officials also noted that maximum temperatures in a few parts of Tamil Nadu may gradually reduce by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius until May 10, bringing slight relief from the ongoing summer heat. In Chennai, temperatures are expected to remain near normal levels today.

People living in rain-prone districts have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning activity.
