The Tamil Nadu government has announced that the first phase of the population census will begin across the state on July 17. The census, which was originally scheduled for 2021, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being resumed as part of the nationwide census exercise.

According to official sources, the first phase will take place for 45 days from July 17 to August 30. During this stage, officials will carry out house listing and collect details about housing conditions, basic facilities and household assets. Enumerators will gather information through around 33 questions related to residential status, amenities and infrastructure available to families.

This time, the census will be conducted fully through digital methods, replacing the earlier manual system. Across India, about 3.2 million government officials are expected to participate in the exercise. The second phase, which involves the detailed population count, is expected to be conducted next year after the completion of the house-listing stage.
