In Rameswaram in the state of Tamil Nadu is situated a famous temple of Lord Shiva and this temple is visited by many people. Madurai airport is the nearest airport situated near to this temple and it is at a distance of around 160 kms. It is believed that by visiting this superb temple our sins get washed away and salvation could be attained. It is important to note that this temple is located on an island off the Sethu coast of Rameswaram.
This temple is famous for being one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples. It is superb to note that the three popular nayanars namely Appar, Sundarar and Thirugnana Sambandar have played great part in glorifying this temple with their songs. It was in the 12th century this temple construction was first started. It is important to note that there are two lingams namely Ramalingam built from sand by Godess Sita and Viswalingam that is brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailash and these two lingams present inside the sanctum are sensational.
The presence of huge walls on the four sides surrounding this temple and the presence of huge corridors of 4000 ft are stunning. It would be surprising to mention here that in the initial stages this temple was a thatched shed and slowly with the help of many people over a period of many centuries this present temple construction has evolved. Inside this temple are present 22 holy water bodies or thirthas and these were made by lord Rama with his arrows.
The Rajagopuram present on the eastern side of the temple is of 126 ft in height. The people visiting this temple would be delighted to see the presence of many mandapams inside this temple. One important piece of information is the nandhi that is present is huge and it has got height of 9 feet and length of 12 feet.
