Tamil Nadu continues to experience intense summer heat due to dry weather conditions and the onset of the Agni Natchathiram (Kathiri Veyil) season. Amid rising temperatures across the state, rain is also expected to continue in several districts until May 10, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai.

As temperatures surged above normal levels by 2°C to 4°C, places including Karur, Erode, and Vellore recorded scorching heat of around 102°F on Tuesday. Several other parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed temperatures close to 100°F.

Weather officials stated that an atmospheric trough extending from central parts of South Madhya Pradesh to the Gulf of Mannar through Vidarbha, Marathwada, Interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu is influencing the current weather pattern.

Due to this system, light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning was reported in parts of Dindigul, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, Erode, and Nilgiris districts.

The weather department has forecast heavy rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds in isolated places across hill and southern districts including Coimbatore hill areas, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts.

Meteorologists also warned that daytime temperatures may remain 2°C to 3°C above normal in many parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days. In Chennai, temperatures are expected to touch nearly 102°F during the peak afternoon hours.
