Madambakkam Lake in South Chennai is set to get relief from sewage inflow, as the Tambaram Corporation has proposed a comprehensive underground sewerage project along with a new sewage treatment plant (STP).

According to official documents submitted to the National Green Tribunal, the project includes laying a 267 km underground sewer network that will cover around 37,540 buildings in Chitlapakkam, Sembakkam, and Madambakkam areas.

A key component of the project is the construction of a 35 MLD (million litres per day) capacity STP at Pazhathottam. Officials stated that the proposed facility is designed to meet requirements for the next 50 years, with scope for future upgrades.

The Tamil Nadu government has already sanctioned the project in February, and the work is expected to be completed within two years from the date of the work order.

At present, sewage from households is being collected through tanker lorries and transported to the STP at Mannuran Kulam for treatment. Private sewage tankers are also allowed, and all such vehicles are monitored using GPS tracking to prevent illegal dumping.

The new infrastructure is expected to significantly reduce pollution and improve the ecological condition of Madambakkam Lake.
