Political developments in Tamil Nadu have gained momentum after Indian National Congress confirmed that it has received a formal letter from Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), sparking strong speculation about a possible post-election alliance and government formation in the state.

Congress state in-charge Girish Chodankar said the letter sent by TVK was discussed with senior party leadership in New Delhi. He added that detailed information regarding the party’s next political move would be announced during a joint press conference involving the Tamil Nadu PCC President, CLP leaders, and newly elected MLAs.

According to Chodankar, the meeting and discussion on the alliance developments were held with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and the party leadership would soon clarify its position publicly.

TVK Emerges as Single Largest Party

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor-politician Vijay, secured 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, emerging as the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly election.

However, TVK remains 10 seats short of the 118-seat majority mark required to independently form the government. Political analysts believe the party may seek support from Congress and Left parties to establish a stable coalition government.

Sources also confirmed that Vijay has sought time to meet Rajendra Arlekar regarding the government formation process.

Vijay Thanks Tamil Nadu Voters

After the election results, Vijay addressed the people of Tamil Nadu through a social media message, thanking voters for their support and trust. He recalled the criticism faced during the launch of TVK and described the election outcome as a historic political moment.

The strong performance of TVK has significantly altered Tamil Nadu’s traditional political landscape, breaking the long-standing dominance of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

DMK Criticises Congress Over Alliance Speculation

As reports of a possible TVK-Congress understanding surfaced, DMK leaders strongly criticised Congress for considering support to TVK.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai accused Congress of “backstabbing” alliance partners and warned that such a move could weaken opposition unity ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

He stated that the decision could damage Congress’ credibility among INDIA alliance partners across the country.

Stalin Continues as Caretaker Chief Minister

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar accepted the resignation of outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and his Council of Ministers. Stalin has been requested to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the formation of the new government.

Tamil Nadu Politics Witnesses Major Shift

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has become one of the most significant political turning points in the state’s recent history. The rise of TVK as a dominant force has reshaped voter sentiment and created new coalition possibilities.

With alliance talks intensifying, the coming days are expected to be crucial in deciding whether Tamil Nadu will witness a TVK-led coalition government backed by Congress and smaller parties.
