Hostel and PG accommodation charges in Chennai will increase from May 5, 2026, following a sharp rise in the cost of essential items such as commercial LPG cylinders, firewood, and groceries.

The revised rates were announced by the Tamil Nadu IT Hostel and PG Owners Association, which stated that increasing operational costs have made it difficult to continue services at existing prices.

According to the association, hostel operators are currently paying between ₹6,000 and ₹7,000 per commercial gas cylinder, while the cost of firewood and food ingredients has also surged significantly. Despite efforts to manage expenses, operators said a rent revision has become unavoidable.

As per the new pricing structure, the minimum rent for shared accommodations has been revised. For four-sharing rooms, the non-AC rent has been increased from ₹6,500 to ₹7,500, while AC rooms will start from around ₹7,000. For three-sharing rooms, non-AC accommodation is priced at ₹7,000 and AC at ₹8,000. In the case of two-sharing rooms, non-AC rent is fixed at ₹8,000, and AC rooms will cost around ₹9,000.

The association also clarified that the final rent may vary depending on the facilities provided by individual hostels, such as food quality, amenities, and location.

This hike is expected to impact a large number of students and working professionals who depend on affordable shared accommodation in Chennai. Hostel operators have requested residents to support the decision, stating that the increase is necessary to continue providing food and living facilities without compromising quality.

The rent revision highlights the growing cost pressures in urban areas, where rising fuel and food prices are directly affecting accommodation expenses.
