Onion price hits Rs. 55/- per kg!

The rising trend of onion price continues – it sells at Rs. 55/- per in the retail market.

The failure of monsoon in the states Karnataka & Maharashtra which are the leading producers of onion is cited to be the main reason for this. The failure of monsoon affected all stages of plantation including sowing the seeds and harvesting apart from the fact that already harvested products got rotten.

Due to lower harvest, the quantity of onion reaching the wholesale vegetable market at Koyambedu in Chennai has come down considerably. Usually, 80 trucks are used to bring onion daily. Now, the traders inform that only 50 trucks bring onion.

Chennai metro city required 5000 tons of onions daily. However, only 3500 tons arrive at Koyambedu. Hence, high quality onions are sold at a higher price of Rs. 55/- per kg and lower quality onion is sold at Rs. 45/- per kg.

Traders observe that this rising trend would continue during the next 2 months. It is then expected that the harvest of onions would return to higher level when the prospects of price reduction are good!
