Transporting goods across Tamil Nadu is set to become more expensive, as lorry owners have announced a 25% increase in freight charges starting June 15.

The decision was made during the executive committee meeting of the Tamil Nadu State Lorry Owners Federation held in Namakkal on Tuesday. Representatives from various districts attended the meeting and discussed the mounting challenges faced by transport operators.

According to federation members, the increase is mainly due to the steady rise in diesel prices, higher toll fees, and growing maintenance and operating costs. They said transporters have been absorbing these expenses for a long time, but continuing without revising freight rates has become increasingly difficult.

As a result, freight charges for goods transportation across the state will go up by 25% from June 15.

The hike is expected to affect several sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, retail, and construction, all of which depend heavily on road transport. Industry experts say the increased transportation costs could eventually lead to higher prices for essential goods and other commodities.

The federation is expected to release more details about the revised freight rates in the coming days.
