A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal and a cyclonic circulation extending close to the Tamil Nadu coast up to the Gulf of Mannar are expected to bring continuous rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu till May 19, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.

Several coastal and delta districts including Chennai, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur have already received widespread rainfall due to the weather system.

The weather department said temperatures across many parts of Tamil Nadu have dropped by around 4 to 5 degrees Celsius below normal levels. Cloudy skies and pleasant weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms was reported in delta districts including Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur following the formation of the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Rainfall activity is expected to continue across coastal Tamil Nadu and southern districts over the coming days. The weather office has also forecast thunderstorms and moderate rain in districts such as Dindigul, Theni and Nilgiris.

In Chennai, cloudy weather prevailed throughout the day with moderate rainfall recorded in several parts of the city and suburban areas. Similar weather conditions are likely to continue in Chennai over the weekend.

Meanwhile, strong winds with speeds ranging between 50 kmph and 60 kmph are expected over coastal Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar and the Comorin Sea. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till May 19 due to rough sea conditions and strong winds.

The southwest monsoon is also expected to advance into parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, indicating the gradual onset of the monsoon season in the region.
