Chennai is gearing up for a major transportation upgrade as the Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam Metro Rail project has officially entered the initial stage of execution. The long-pending metro extension project is expected to improve connectivity between the airport and southern suburban regions while significantly reducing traffic congestion on GST Road.

The proposed metro corridor will directly connect the Chennai International Airport with the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus, one of Tamil Nadu’s largest integrated bus terminals serving passengers travelling to southern districts.

Direct Metro Connectivity from Airport to Kilambakkam

At present, passengers travelling from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus rely on suburban trains, MTC buses and private transport. This has resulted in severe traffic congestion across major suburban stretches including:

- Pallavaram
- Chromepet
- Tambaram
- Perungalathur
- Vandalur

Residents and commuters have repeatedly demanded a direct metro rail connection to ease travel difficulties and improve public transport accessibility in South Chennai.

Rs 9,335 Crore Chennai Metro Extension Project

The Tamil Nadu government has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the metro rail extension from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam.

Project Highlights:
Total Project Cost: Rs 9,335 crore
Route Length: 15.46 kilometres
Proposed Metro Stations: 13
Corridor Type: Elevated Metro Line

The proposed metro stations include:

- Chennai Airport
- Pallavaram
- Kodhandam Nagar
- Chromepet
- Mahalakshmi Colony
- Tambaram
- Irumbuliyur
Peerkankaranai

The corridor will offer seamless connectivity between key transport hubs including the airport, Tambaram railway station and Kilambakkam bus terminal.

Land Acquisition and Preliminary Work Underway

Officials confirmed that route alignment studies, land surveys and preliminary planning activities have largely been completed. The Tamil Nadu government has also granted approval for land acquisition works to begin.

Discussions are currently being held with several departments including:

- National Highways Authority
- Airport authorities
- Chennai Metro Water Board
- Other government agencies

The metro project, which remained delayed for several years, has now regained momentum with early-stage works already underway.

GST Road Traffic Congestion Expected to Reduce

Once operational, the new metro rail corridor is expected to:

Reduce heavy traffic congestion on GST Road
- Improve travel time between Airport and Kilambakkam
- Enhance public transport access in South Chennai
- Support growing suburban development
- Benefit lakhs of daily commuters and bus passengers

Officials believe the project will become one of Chennai’s most important suburban transport infrastructure developments in the coming years.
