Chennai Corporation Collects ₹9.36 Crore in Fines in 74 Days for Civic Violations

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has collected ₹9.36 crore in fines over the last 74 days from residents and commercial establishments for violations across five major categories, including plastic usage, conservancy, mosquito breeding, illegal sewage connections, and park-related offences.

Between October 1 and December 14, over 80,000 penalty transactions were recorded using more than 1,000 Point of Sale (POS) machines deployed across all city zones. On Saturday, December 14 alone, enforcement teams collected ₹1.14 crore, registering 15,372 transactions, reflecting intensified civic enforcement.

Category-wise fine collection during the 74-day period includes:

- -₹5.85 crore for conservancy violations

- ₹2.34 crore for plastic-related offences

- ₹1.01 crore for mosquito breeding

- ₹2.65 crore for park-related violations, including unauthorised tree pruning and felling

- ₹12.35 lakh for illegal stormwater drain (SWD) connections

Additionally, fines amounting to ₹14.52 lakh were imposed for the burning of solid waste across commercial, public, and private premises. Mosquito breeding violations across shops, apartments, and construction sites alone accounted for over ₹55 lakh in fines.

Under the ongoing ban on single-use plastics, penalties were levied as follows:

- ₹100 for small establishments

- ₹1,000 for large establishments

- ₹25,000 for plastic manufacturers

From October 1 onwards, the GCC collected ₹72.20 lakh from small commercial establishments and ₹68.52 lakh from medium commercial establishments for various violations. Officials stated that strict enforcement will continue to ensure public health, environmental safety, and civic discipline across Chennai.
