An awareness programme was organised at Dr. MGR Janaki College of Arts & Science in Chennai to mark World Kidney Day, focusing on kidney health, early detection of kidney disease and patient support. The event was conducted by Kidney Help India (KHI), an NGO working for the welfare of kidney patients.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Prabhu Kanchi, Founder Trustee of KHI, said the organisation supports kidney patients through initiatives such as Zero Dialysis, aART (Adult Assistance for Renal Transplant) and KITES (Kidney Transplant Support for Children). KHI also conducts awareness programmes, medical camps, nephrology consultations and distributes free medicines to economically disadvantaged patients. He noted that 1 in 8 people in India is affected by Chronic Kidney Disease, and nearly 2.2 lakh patients reach end-stage kidney failure every year, highlighting the urgent need for better access to dialysis and transplants.

The programme, held at a women’s college, aimed to spread awareness through women who play a key role in families and communities. Nearly 400 students formed the shape of a human kidney, symbolising collective responsibility towards kidney health. The event also featured student awareness talks and an experience-sharing session by a kidney transplant survivor.

During the programme, five dialysis technicians were honoured with the “Dialysis Guardian Awards” for their dedicated service. KHI also launched its official website and introduced a membership card for kidney patients, which will provide concessions on laboratory tests, imaging services and dialysis medicines.

Prof. Dr. Neelamekam Kapali, Trustee of KHI, and Ms. Subashanthini Palanisamy, Advisor to KHI, were also present and stressed the importance of early diagnosis and community participation in preventing kidney disease.
