The Southern Railway has established electric vehicle battery swapping stations at 21 suburban railway stations across Chennai as part of its modernization and eco-friendly infrastructure initiatives.
The project has been implemented through a five-year agreement with a private company, which will manage and operate the battery swapping facilities.
Railway officials stated that the initiative aims to:
- Encourage the use of environment-friendly electric vehicles
- Improve commuter convenience
- Support sustainable urban transportation
The battery swapping stations are now operational at several major railway stations, including:
- Chennai Central
- Egmore
- Kodambakkam
- Velachery
- Pallavaram
- Saidapet
- Tiruvanmiyur
- Perungudi
- Villivakkam
- Washermanpet
and other key suburban locations.
According to the Railway Department, the partnership is expected to generate an estimated annual revenue of ₹53.43 crore.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to modernize Chennai’s suburban railway network while promoting green mobility solutions.
