Chennai Jointless Bridge Technology Eliminates Noise and Jerks on Overbridges
In a major infrastructure breakthrough, scientists at the CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre have developed an advanced jointless bridge technology that eliminates the noise and jerks typically experienced on overbridges.
The innovation uses Engineered Cement Composite (ECC), a high-performance material that replaces traditional expansion joints. This enables the construction of seamless bridge decks, ensuring smoother travel and improved durability.
Unlike conventional joints that wear out quickly and require frequent maintenance, this new system prevents water seepage, debris accumulation, and structural damage, significantly reducing long-term costs.
According to N Anandhavalli, the technology has completed laboratory testing and is expected to be a game changer once implemented at the industrial level.
The innovation can be applied to both new bridges and existing structures, supporting India’s growing infrastructure needs with low maintenance and high efficiency.
