The long-awaited connectivity project at Kilambakkam is finally nearing completion, bringing major relief to thousands of daily passengers traveling through Chennai’s southern gateway. According to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and Southern Railway, the Kilambakkam railway station and integrated skywalk project are expected to open by the end of June 2026.

The remaining portion of the elevated pedestrian skywalk connecting the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam with the upcoming suburban railway station across GST Road is currently under final-stage construction. Officials confirmed that the pending girder installation work will be completed next week.

The ₹79-crore infrastructure project includes:

- Elevated pedestrian skywalk
- Escalators and lifts
- Covered walkways
- Direct railway station connectivity
- Improved passenger access across GST Road

Once operational, the Kilambakkam railway station is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve public transport connectivity for commuters traveling between Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tambaram, and southern districts of Tamil Nadu.

Currently, passengers using the Kilambakkam bus terminus face severe traffic congestion and difficulty crossing GST Road safely. The new integrated railway connectivity project aims to solve these long-standing issues and provide seamless multi-modal transport access.

Southern Railway officials stated that station operations can begin immediately after the skywalk integration works are completed. Roofing works, passenger seating installation, and finishing activities are already progressing at the railway station site located between Vandalur and Urappakkam on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu suburban railway corridor.

Officials also mentioned that earlier delays were caused due to election-related restrictions, traffic diversion permissions, and construction challenges on the busy GST Road stretch.

With the June-end deadline now officially confirmed, Chennai commuters are eagerly waiting for the opening of the Kilambakkam railway station and skywalk, which is expected to become one of the city’s most important transport integration hubs.
