Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority or CMDA has proposed restoration of 3 beaches (beach restoration project) located at Thiruvottiyur, Kasimedu and Injambakkam to Akkarai stretch.  It is noteworthy that TNSCZMA or Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority wants CMDA to get blue flag certification in coordination with the NCSCM or National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management. Information gathered is that for beaches in Thiruvottiyur and Kasimedu, the beach restoration project must address issues like oil leakage, sewage and open defecation etc.

According to Supriya Sahu, environment dept secretary it was clear that a comprehensive DPR or detailed project report is being prepared to provide a suitable solution for all the issues. She revealed that CMDA would execute its restoration plan and work to attain blue flag status would take place simultaneously. Information gathered is that social, environmental and hydrological studies were being carried out. Construction of pedestrian footpaths, toilets, landscaping, play areas and parking etc were present in the original plan of CMDA.

Already 20 to 30 criteria required for blue flag certification have been met by the beach restoration project. This was mentioned by an officer from CMDA. He added that water sampling tests plus ensuring prohibition of stray dogs on the beaches, formation of beach management committee, creating solid waste management policy etc would be carried out. Point is that CMDA has been asked by TNSCZMA to ensure alternative livelihood opportunities for nearby localities etc. From June, CMDA would start the restoration work plus apply for the blue flag status simultaneously.
