Posted on: 25/Apr/2024 9:04:56 AM

On 23rd April, famous Chennai based heart surgeon Dr. K.M. Cherian met his old patient Daisy D`Costa who came from Sydney in Australia to Chennai.

What was sensational about this meeting was that Daisy was 93 years of age and Dr. Cherian performed a bypass on her nearly 50 years back at the Railway Hospital in Chennai.

It was confirmed by him that Daisy is the longest surviving bypass patient in India. He spoke about how on 23rd April 1976 he performed bypass surgery on the then 44 year old Daisy and how she went back to her home in just 11 days after the bypass surgery.

It must be recalled that in the 1970s the medical field was not well developed like it is now and bypass heart surgeries were rare. In June 1975, Dr. K.M. Cherian who was 32 years old performed India`s first ever coronary artery bypass graft or CABG on a 42 year old Kaja Moideen from Railways. Dr. Cherain explained about various challenges he and his team of doctors faced in those years while performing CABG.

Point is that in September 1975 Daisy D`Costa got severe pain in her chest and was taken to Dr. Cherian for bypass surgery. She was asked by Dr. Cherian to get ready for the bypass surgery and for that she was asked to reduce her weight. In April 1976, Dr. Cherian performed CABG on her.

Daisy after her bypass surgery began helping the police department and became a member of TN state vigilance committee. It is really sensational to note that Daisy travels to countries like Australia, USA etc to meet her children and grandchildren etc. Daisy spoke about how she has slowed down due to her leg fracture etc and how she follows her diet strictly and meets doctors regularly.
