Would you believe this!!

It is now said that the number of Coronavirus cases in Chengalpet district is just behind those of Chennai and Coimbatore now. The Covid-19 situation in Chengalpet has turned alarming now because of the slackness of the officials towards the second wave.

Densely populated localities like Tambaram, Pallavaram, Chromepet and St Thomas Mount belonging to Chengalpet district have been severely affected now.  From 50 cases that were reported in January in 2021 from these places the numbers reduced to 40 in February and from the March end it shot up to around 200. From 771 cases on 14th April, the number of cases went to1164 on 30th April. On 9th of May 2021, Chengalpet district had as many as 2279. An officer expressed his shock and said that the numbers have not come down below 2000 till now. More than 1000 persons have died due to Covid-19 in this Chengalpet district.

The huge rise in the number of Coronavirus cases in Chengalpet was due to frequent travelling by the public to Chennai city. The district administration has been blamed now for the increase in the number of cases here. It is brought out that local body officials were half as active as during the first wave of infection. This has been given as the main reason for surge in the cases.

As per a social activist Mr. V. Santhanam from Chromepet, it was clear that the municipal officers did not work effectively this year unlike last year. It is learnt that there was a huge crowd at Tambaram railway station (many without facemasks and other norms etc) until the lockdown was announced by the government. Truth is that even garbage pickers did not wear facemasks while doing their work. It was pointed out by another social activist Mr. John that the municipal and health workers were not effective in this Covid infection wave

Mr. John finally shed light on how the health workers collecting samples did not go to all the villages and how the police personnel also did not bother to stop people from roaming during the lockdown.
