The Coronavirus infection pandemic has spread thick and fast to all parts of TN. Many neighbouring districts like Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Thiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi etc have been reporting more Covid-19 cases now. These districts are facing a huge shortage of oxygen beds and ICU beds now. As a result, many Covid-19 patients from these districts are now rushing to Chennai for help.
These Coronavirus patients have been running from pillar to post as Chennai hospitals now have minimal beds and are unable to accommodate many. On an average every day, TN has a total of 500 ICU beds available. It is shocking to note here that there are 17 districts in TN that have less than 10 ICU beds available for the patients. Districts like Chengalpet, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram and Ranipet do not even have 10 beds.
It was brought to light that a Covid-19 patient was brought from Vellore to Chennai for treatment but they struggled for more than 6 hours to get beds at RGGGH in Chennai. There are many now who are coming from the neighbouring districts to Chennai for the sake of ICU beds and oxygen supply.
It is learnt that from the neighbouring districts many Coronavirus affected patients and their families come to the 3 main hospitals like RGGGH, KMCH and SMCH in Chennai. It was later mentioned by a senior officer belonging to SMCH that allocation of beds has become tougher now with both local patients as well as those coming from the neighbouring districts.
