COVID spread stagnated in some localities and increased more in other localities in Chennai

This piece of information would surprise many Chennai residents!!

It is a known fact that the second Covid - 19 wave has been wreaking havoc in Chennai. The containment zone data from GCC reveal that the spread of Covid-19 infection has stagnated in some places in Chennai but has risen exponentially in other places in Chennai.

It must not be forgotten that the number of streets under strict containment was 375 on 28th April.  Now, the number of streets has increased to 725 on 9th May. In the last 11days, such streets doubled in central regions and in the southern regions of Chennai when compared to the rest. From this it is clear that the number of streets under strict containment were not spread equally. Truth is that in these 11 days, northern regions of Chennai had just 4percent rise in the number of streets under strict containment.

It is important to mention that the central region (zone 6 to 10) contributes 60% of all containment zones. Twenty six percent has been contributed from the southern Chennai zones (zones 11 to 15) northern zones (zones 1to 5) contribute the rest 14%.There has been 100% increase in the containment zones in Ambattur zone (zone 7), Teynampet zone (zone 9),Kodambakkam (zone 10), Valasaravakkam zone( zone11), Alandur zone( zone 12) and Adyar zone ( zone 13). In the same period of time, Valasaravakkam zone has recorded almost four fold increase.

The superb piece of information is that there has been a reduction in the number of containment zones in the north Chennai zones like Tondiarpet and Madhavaram. In the last 11 days, there has been no net increase in the number of containment zones in the Royapuram zone.

During the same period, the number of wards not reporting a single street under containment has gone down from 80 to 51. As per a data analyst Mr. Vijayanand (who has been tracking Coronavirus cases in Chennai city), the active Covid-19 cases are witnessing a decreasing trend in various zones such as Royapuram, Tondiarpet, TVK Nagar, Perungudi and Madhavaram. He added that the active cases are increasing rapidly in other zones like Anna Nagar, Adyar, Ambattur, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Tiruvottiyur and Sholinganallur etc.
