Getting diabetes from Covid-19 infection!! Surprised and shocked right!!

In the state of Tamil Nadu, Covid-19 infection has affected more than 5lakhs people. There are many healthy persons who are getting affected by diabetes now due to Covid-19 infection. Information is that in those persons with diabetes conditions this Coronavirus infection has made their sugar levels worsen. Many have been developing complications like organ disorders etc.

Over the last 2 weeks, post- Covid clinics in Chennai have screened more than 250 people and it has been brought out that atleast 4 healthy people developed diabetes.

According to Dr. Uma Maheshwari, department of community medicine, in at atleast 10 persons with diabetes their condition got worsened. Now, one of the major post- Covid complications in the people is the onset of diabetes issue and this has been reported by several doctors belonging to the private hospitals.

It has been mentioned by some infectious diseases experts that diabetes is associated with increased morbidity risk among the Covids-19 patients. He explained about how the onset of diabetes and metabolic complications including organ failures in pre-existing diabetics has been observed in people with Coronavirus infection.

Dr. Uma Maheshwari later threw light on the pumping of high doses of insulin in many diabetics due to conditions such as ketoacidosis or hyperosmolarity in the blood.

It must be noted that ketoacidosis is build up of acidic substances called ketones at dangerous levels and hyperosmolarity is the presence of high concentration of sodium, glucose etc in the blood. She hinted that diabetes was responsible for many deaths in the Covid-19 patients. Truth is there is now a relation between metabolic disorder and the novel virus.

High doses of steroids during their active phases of the Coronavirus infection has been cited as the reasons for the variations in the blood glucose levels. The symptoms were brought down by the steroids in many patients. It is believed that the steroids mimic the action of cortisol (a hormone produced in us that increases the insulin resistance). By this the blood glucose levels get increased. Fact is that they block the action of insulin.
