The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has proposed to transform areas around 41 metro stations into integrated multimodal hubs to improve last-mile connectivity and commuter convenience.

A tender has been floated to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) covering a 500-metre radius around each station, marking the beginning of the project.

Focus on Seamless Connectivity

The plan aims to enable smooth interchange between metro, buses, autos, taxis, MRTS, and suburban rail, addressing long-standing last-mile issues faced by daily commuters.

Key Improvements Proposed

- Pedestrian-friendly infrastructure such as continuous footpaths, shaded walkways, and skywalks
- Dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones for autos and taxis
- Relocation of bus stops closer to metro stations
- Better feeder services and barrier-free access

Reason for the Move

The initiative comes after frequent complaints about poor pedestrian access, unsafe crossings, and lack of coordination between different transport systems.

Stations to be Upgraded

All 41 metro stations, including major hubs like Central, Egmore, Guindy, Saidapet, and Alandur, will be covered, with high-traffic areas expected to see major upgrades.
