Biometric Attendance System Implemented for Tamil Nadu Secretariat Employees from Today

The Tamil Nadu government has officially implemented a biometric and Face ID-based attendance system for Secretariat employees from today, June 1.

The Chief Secretariat campus in Chennai houses the offices of the Chief Minister, ministers, and several government departments. More than 2,500 employees are working in the Secretariat and Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai complex, including secretaries, directors, managing directors, and staff members.

As per the order issued by the Human Resources Management Department, biometric attendance has now been made mandatory for employees working in the department. Initially, the system is being implemented for over 500 employees in the Human Resources Management Department.

Earlier, the biometric attendance system was introduced a few months ago, but it was withdrawn after strong opposition from employee unions. Staff members had raised concerns that the system would clearly track their office entry and exit timings.

Now, for the first time in Tamil Nadu Secretariat history, biometric or Face ID-based attendance has been made compulsory. The government is also planning to gradually expand this system to other departments in the Secretariat and eventually to government offices across the state.
