New LPG gas connections have been temporarily suspended across India following instructions from the Central Government, according to officials from oil companies.

The move comes amid concerns over misuse of gas connections and supply disruptions, which have affected distribution in recent weeks.

Supply Disruptions and Delay in Cylinder Booking

Due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia earlier this year, fuel transportation was impacted, causing disruptions in LPG supply. As a result:

- Waiting period for cylinder booking has increased
- In urban areas, the gap has been extended from 21 days to 25 days
- In rural areas, it has increased up to 45 days

This has led to inconvenience for consumers relying on regular LPG supply.

Misuse of Aadhaar for Multiple Connections

Authorities have identified cases where individuals are using different Aadhaar numbers to obtain multiple LPG connections, even when they already have one.

This misuse has raised serious concerns about illegal duplication of connections, affecting fair distribution of cylinders.

Government Action and Clarification

An official from the Petroleum Ministry stated that:

- Complaints were received regarding people applying for extra connections unnecessarily

- To prevent misuse, new LPG connections have been temporarily stopped
- However, existing LPG supply and distribution remain normal

The official also assured that the suspension is temporary and steps are being taken to streamline the system.
