The infants could be protected from gastrointestinal infections by making them consume goat milk. It must be noted that goat milk contains strong pre-biotic and anti-infection properties. A research study was conducted and it looked at the oligosaccharides present in the goat’s milk. It is known that oligosaccharides are a type of pre-biotic that could boost the growth of the beneficial bacteria. It would also give protection against harmful bacteria present in the gut.

In the goat milk formula, as many as 14 naturally occurring oligosaccharides are available. This was as per a research that has been published in the British Journal of Nutrition. The important piece of information is 5 out of 14 oligosaccharides are also present in the human breast milk.

The study was unique because of the fact that it was the first ever study that has revealed the diversity of oligosaccharides in goat’s milk based infant’s formula. In addition to this, the similarity to the human milk has been brought out by the study. It has been shown by the study that the pre-biotic oligosaccharides in the goat milk formula are effective in promoting the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.

It was later mentioned by the lead investigator of this study, Harsharn Gill that further research including clinical trials would help their team to confirm about the benefits of goat milk for the infants. Point to be noted is human milk has abundant supply and diverse array of oligosaccharides that could provide many health benefits for the infants. Infant formulas are used when breast feeding is not possible or insufficient. He spoke about how the infant formulas might have less information about the oligosaccharides they have in them.

Information gathered is the study examined the presence of oligosaccharides in 2 goat milk formulas like Oli6 stage 1 for babies aged 0 to 6 months and Oli6 stage 2 for babies between 6 to 12 months. The pre-biotic and anti-infection properties were studied. It is known that most widely used alternative to breast milk is cow’s milk. Now it is revealed that the goat’s milk is closer to the human breast milk especially in oligosaccharides content.
