So, the summer for this year has begun! It’s time for kids to indulge in outdoor activities and enjoy family outings. Summer naturally invites the need for keeping your children’s skin protected from uninvited disasters caused during vacations and long outings.

Here we have easy tips to protect and safeguard sensitive skin your child has and enjoy the summer regardless of prickly heat!

It is always best to keep your newborn indoors during peak noon hours and expose to warm sunlight only in the early morning hours until they turn 6 months old. It is always best to stay away from sunscreen for newborns, as their skin is too sensitive to be exposed to chemicals contained in them.

Sunscreen for kids

As your children grow up, it is okay to start using mild sunscreen if necessary. Choose sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Its SPF factor or Sun Protection Factor should be 30.

Sunscreen lotions containing benzophenones, parabens, oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, etc. need to be avoided because they are tinted. The sunscreen you choose should protect you from UVA and UVB rays.

How to apply on your kid?

It is recommended that you apply the lotion before heading out under the sun. It should be applied about 15 to 30 minutes before your head out. In case of swimming or other activities that tend to wipe out the sunscreen, it is recommended for you to reapply the lotion for every once in two hours.

Clothing

Light-weighing cotton clothes are best to wear during summer. Colors like dark red, blue or green will keep you cool as they don’t absorb sunlight. To protect eyes, wear sunglasses so that the sensitive areas around shall be kept safe and protected.

Stay indoors during peak noon hours

Avoid sunlight during peak hours of sunlight which is between 10 am and 4 pm.

Nutrition

Have a lot of fresh veggies, fruits and superfoods containing rich antioxidants. Feed lot of fluids to your child.

Prickly heat

In the neck, face, armpits and upper torso regions, you may find rashes caused due to heat sun that leads to clogged sweat gland that turn itchy. For this, you need to be using mild fragrance soap and bathe with lukewarm water. Have fruits that are rich sources of vitamin C, as it can prevent recurrence of such rashes. Calamine lotion can also come handy at such times.

Sunburn – how to handle?

To treat sunburn, refrigerate a little aloe gel and apply it on the burns. In case this fails, consult with a dermatologist to get rid of the burns.
