From every nook and corners in Chennai, two wheelers are getting stolen these days and many cases are getting reported. Now, Chennai police have launched a new technology to combat vehicle theft cases. By this technology, the ownership of the vehicles would get verified instantly.

It is learnt that this new technology comes under a safe city project that includes installation of 5200 CCTV cameras in Chennai for Rs 165 crores. Information collected is that the newly launched portable cameras would scan the vehicle number plates plus automatically detect vehicle registration numbers and cross reference with the data that is present in the command and control centre in the DCP headquarters in Velachery.

How does this technology work?

It must be taken into account that after identifying a match alerts are sent to the officers across Chennai. The officers would be able to screen vehicles using portable and mobile cameras. After an alert has been confirmed, separate handheld devices of the field level officers would capture a photograph of the person operating the vehicle.

Then, the photograph would be linked with the police Face Recognition System or FRS. It is brought out that this system would be upgraded every day by the TN state crime records bureau.

By this, tracking of suspects especially those associated with activities like drug peddling etc would also be possible. This was as per Mr. Sadasivam, ACP Washermenpet in north Chennai. In Old Washermenpet, the pilot phase of the project has been implemented now.
