The Greater Chennai Corporation has completed a study on introducing smart parking solutions to tackle the city’s growing traffic congestion.
Currently, Chennai has over 50 lakh two-wheelers and 10 lakh cars, with parking spilling over into 20,000 roadside spots against just 12,000 designated spaces. This unregulated system is cited as a key cause of traffic jams, where covering just 1 km during peak hours can take more than 35 minutes.
As a pilot project, the Anna Nagar zone has been chosen to test smart parking. Around 40 roads will have one-side parking slots, with fees fixed at ₹20 per car and ₹10 per two-wheeler per hour. The study report has been sent to the Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board for approval.
Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran said that once clearance is received, contracts with private players will be finalized within weeks. If successful, smart parking will be rolled out across all 15 zones of Chennai to help ease congestion.
