Who could forget the Ganesapuram subway in north Chennai that would have heavy water stagnation during the monsoons creating many issues for the residents!!
Now, there is some good news for the residents of Chennai in the form of revamping of this important subway that is the lowest such facility in Chennai.
About a year back, the subway at Ganesapuram was closed for the construction of a railway over bridge. This subway will be reopened tomorrow 25th of September. It is known that this subway links Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi in north Chennai.
It was confirmed by some officials that the reopening of Ganesapuram subway would ease traffic congestion plus would reduce the travel time for the commuters. To drain out water from the subway during the monsoon season, high power motors have been installed also.
In September 2024, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation began work on a 678m long over bridge on the Ganesapuram subway. It is superb to note that the new over bridge would link Poonamallee High Road in central Chennai with the Grand Northern Trunk Road in north Chennai and it would be opened by January 2026. Currently, there are traffic diversions around Stephenson Road Junction and other connecting roads due to the construction works.
According to the GCC Commissioner Mr. J. Kumaragurubaran, from Thursday 25th September onwards the subway would be kept open from 6am to 10pm. The reason for that is due to an increase in the complaints from the residents regarding heavy traffic congestion in the area. He added that the construction work on the over bridge would be done from 10pm to 4am.On both the sides of the subway a 7m wide bituminous road surface is being laid.
It is learnt that roads have been laid and street lights have been installed for the subway. Point is that the pumping capacity is being upgraded with the installation of high power motors to draw the water especially during the monsoon season. As a part of the rail over bridge has been completed now, the subway could be opened in the daytime. This was according to the GCC Commissioner.
