It is a fact that hormonal imbalance can have a huge impact on the reproductive health of a woman. Point is that PCOS or PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition that would affect the reproductive health of females due to imbalance in the hormones.

A woman with PCOS would have several health issues like missed periods, irregular periods, presence of cysts in the ovaries, excess body hairs, over weight etc.

There are some important factors that are responsible for PCOS in women and these are

High androgen levels:

In the normal scenario, a woman would produce androgens or male sex hormones  to some extent but women with PCOS would produce abnormal levels of androgens. This could prevent the ovaries from producing eggs throughout each menstrual cycle.

Insulin resistance:

It is known that pancreas produces insulin hormone and it would help the cells to use sugars for energy. When the body cells don`t react to the insulin as they should, then it would lead to increased blood sugar levels. It must be noted that increased insulin levels would lead to the body producing excess of male hormone androgen that would affect the ovulation process.

Low grade inflammation:

When there is any infection or injury, WBC`s would produce different chemicals. Truth is that this response to an injury or infection etc is termed as low grade inflammation. It has been confirmed by research studies that polycystic ovaries in those with PCOS would create androgens as a result of a form of persistent low grade inflammation.

Hereditary:

When PCOS runs in the family, then there are more chances for women to get PCOS. It is worthy to note that PCOS might be due to some specific genes.

How to treat PCOS:

Those women with PCOS but wanting to become pregnant would be given clomifene. By this, there would be monthly release of an egg from ovaries. It is noteworthy that women with PCOS must exercise daily and this would treat or even prevent insulin resistance. By exercising daily, the woman would be able to avoid becoming overweight and this would help her to keep diabetes at bay.
