Reducing sugar in carbonated and fruit drinks can reduce obesity, says study

Posted on: 09/Jan/2016 10:33:23 AM
The reduction of sugar levels in sweetened drinks and fruit juices can prevent obesity, says a new study that was published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. Researchers at Public Health England have said that at least a million cases of obesity can be prevented over 5 years if the levels of sugar are reduced by 40 percent. They say that it could also prevent 300,000 cases of diabetes and 500,000 cases of being overweight in the UK.

Public Health England has recommended imposing a sugar tax on drinks that have excessive sugar. Say the researchers, An incremental reduction in free sugars added to sugar-sweetened beverages without the use of artificial sweeteners is predicted to reduce the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes... The proposed strategy should be implemented immediately, and could be used in combination with other approaches, such as taxation policies, to produce a more powerful effect... A sugar tax on carbonated beverages in Mexico in 2014 achieved strong results, with sales cut by 12 per cent in the first year the measure was introduced. Sugary drinks are the biggest source of sugar in young people`s diets... We believe a programme to reduce the sugar from the sweetest drinks alongside other measures like controls on advertising and marketing and would lead to a significant drop in the amount of calories consumed.’
