As a step to cut down the tedious process of multiple counseling, Indian Institutes of Tehcnology (IIT) and National Institutes of Technology (NIT) are set to have a common counseling to admit students in the coming year. A technical committee was set up by the Union Ministry of HRD and the differences between counseling procedures with IITs and NITs were assessed. They have then suggested seat allocation process accordingly.
Addressing this welcoming move, chairman of IIT-Kanpur, Prof. M. Anandakrishnan said that both the institutes will have different rankings, but the counseling will be carried out on a common platform. He also added that the nodal agency will be IIT-Kanpur this year.
Speaking about this, a director of new NITs said the move will be beneficial for NITs by fetching quality students. When there is a student holding rank 3000 with IIT and seeks admission in NIT, well very happily welcome him rather than choosing some NIT rank holder standing in place 5000. He also pointed that this new method will be of help in finishing the admission procedures earlier and kick-start classes by August. Students also seem happy with this procedure.
