Scholarships for Indian students

Posted on: 02/Jun/2014 9:43:43 AM
Educational institutions are entering into innovative arrangements with their foreign counterparts to make a foreign degree more affordable.

Indian colleges are tying up with universities and colleges overseas to make even undergraduate courses affordable for students. For instance, Women`s Christian College in Chennai has an American transfer programme with Concordia College in New York in the US that allows students to complete two years of an undergraduate degree in WCC, do one-and a-half years at Concordia, and get an international degree. The programme is open to select students who meet the academic requirements set by WCC and Concordia.

Loyola College`s arrangement with the London South Bank University and Lille Catholic University in France allows students to get an MSc in international business or a BBA degree from these universities after completing part of their studies in Chennai.

“The cost of studying overseas is exorbitant. Loyola charges around Rs 45,000 per semester. The corresponding cost overseas will cost thrice this amount,“ said A Marcus, assistant professor in Loyola`s commerce department and former coordinator of the LSBU programme. Then there are scholarships. “The single biggest challenge for Indian students to study abroad is not the cost but the awareness of scholarships.
There are several good institutions that offer great scholarships. They should target public universities that offer endowment in scholarships and funding,“ said Adarsh Khandelwal, co-founder of overseas educational agency Collegify.

The scholarships will be tenable for the September 2014 and January 2015 student intakes.
