Can elderly persons get birth certificates?

Posted on: 31/May/2014 2:38:39 PM

What is to be done if birth certificate is required one year after?

The birth of a child might not have been registered at the time of birth itself due to some reasons. Even elders can face this problem. This is even more so, as the awareness about birth registration was not much during that time.

So, if birth registration is to be done after 1 year or more after the birth, it can be dome only with the order from the Justice on criminology.

What is the procedure?

‘Non-availability’ certificate has to be obtained. This certificate endorses the fact that the birth being registered has not been entered in any other registration offices.

How to get ‘non-availability’ certificate? à The form is available at the local administration office. This has to be filled and submitted. The officials will check and confirm that the concerned birth has not been registered anywhere else. Then, they will issue the ‘non-availability’ certificate.

Next stage

The non-availability certificate should be submitted in the court. A proof of the place of birth should be produced. Delivery slip or family card or any other related document will suffice.

The officials will enquire and verify the details. Someone 10 years older than the applicant will have to come and testify. If the justice has no doubts, he would order the release of birth certificate. The local administrative officers will then n issue the birth certificate.

What if birth certificate is lost?

Chennai has the complete registration of all birth data from the year 1879. The records from the year 1930 have been entered on the website in the internet.

The public can inform the corporation, have the data checked and verified and get a duplicate certificate. For places other than Chennai City, the statistics on the years of data may vary.

Chennai residents can obtain more information on this issue at the web site:  Chennai corporation
