New Rule for applications form Tamil Nadu Government’s Wedding Help Scheme

Applicants for Tamil Nadu Governments Poor woman Marriage Help Scheme experience a lot of hardships since the introduction of the new rule.
Tamil Nadu Government disburses funds for the wedding of poor girls who have completed 10th Standards or completed graduation under the Moovalur Ramamirtha Ammaiyar Scheme/ When the scheme started in 1989, Rs. 5000/- was given under this scheme.
During the DMK rule in 1996, the amount was raised to Rs. 15000/-. This was raised further to Rs. 20000/- during 2006.
Under the present government, Rs. 25000 and 4 gm Gold for Mangalsutra or ‘thali’ is given for the girls who completed up to 10th Standard. For girls who have completed graduation, Rs. 50000/- and 4 gm Gold is being given.
The applicants submitted relevant applications in the respective regional offices with the required documents. The officials conducted enquiries 1 month before the date of wedding and released the assistance fund.
With the change of government during 2011, the applications were stopped in the regional offices. The applications are available only at the Corporation Headquarters, at Ripon Building. The poor applicants have to travel long distances spending considerable time, money, and energy.
For the last few months, new set of rules are being followed. Applicants will have to register ‘on-line’ first. They have to produce the receipt for the same and submit it to the official at Ripon Building. This official will give another application form which should be filled and submitted. Thereafter, enquiries will be conducted and financial assistance will be released.
While registering ‘on-line’, scanned copies of the photographs of the bride & the bridegroom, ration card, Voter ID, Educational qualification certificates, Marks certificate, caste certificate, and parents’ photographs must be attached.
It takes a minimum of 90 minutes to fill up this ‘on-line’ application. A sum of Rs. 800/- to Rs. 15000/- needs to be spent at the Internet Service centres. The receipt of this application should be submitted to the official at Ripon Building who gives another application. All the attachments have to be made again to be submitted with this new application. This has to be completed 1 month before the wedding. The poor applicants are subjected to great hardships.
Applicants from North madras especially are either laboures and belong to lower middle class. They plan to complete the wedding within 1 to 3 months. They find it difficult being compelled to spend time ‘on-line’ in the internet centres and travelling up to Ripon Building. The previous rule permitted time up to 15 days before the wedding.
Now-a-days, the applications are submitted not earlier than 1 month before the wedding are rejected outright and the applicants are thrown out.
With these hardships, the public demand that only one of the procedures, either on-line application OR the application at Ripon Building should be followed.
