UPI Rule Change: Users Can Now Check Balance Only 50 Times a Day - New Guidelines from NPCI

Posted on: 29/May/2025 1:18:38 PM

The number of digital transactions in India is witnessing rapid growth, with UPI (Unified Payments Interface) leading the surge. In a significant development, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced new restrictions to ensure the stability of UPI services, following recent disruptions.

These new rules will come into effect from August 1, 2025.

Why the Change?

In recent months, there have been frequent and unexpected shutdowns of UPI services. With the majority of users now heavily dependent on digital payments, such interruptions have caused widespread inconvenience. To address these issues and improve system performance, the NPCI has decided to impose certain usage limitations.

Key Highlights of the New UPI Rules

Balance Check Limit: 50 Times Per App

- Users can now check their bank balance only up to 50 times per day on a single UPI app.

- There is currently no restriction on balance checks, but starting August 1, a limit will be enforced.

- If a user operates two different UPI apps, they can check their balance 50 times per app, totaling 100 balance checks per day.

Bank Account Link Check: 25 Times Per Day

- Users will be allowed to verify which bank accounts are linked to their mobile number only 25 times per day.

- This check can only be done after selecting the bank and making a request.

- Earlier, there was no limit on this function.

Transaction Status Checks Limited to Service Providers

- Only authorized payment service providers (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm) can check transaction status in cases of time delay or uncertainty.

- These checks are now restricted to improve overall UPI system efficiency.

Strict Monitoring of Payment Apps

NPCI has directed all payment service providers to:

Closely monitor their platforms for technical issues or delays.
- Submit a comprehensive audit report by August 31, 2025.
Fix bugs and improve performance to avoid penalties.

Failure to comply may result in:

- Hefty fines
- Temporary restrictions
- Or even a ban on adding new users

These changes aim to improve the reliability and stability of UPI services nationwide. Users are advised to take note of the new limits and adjust their usage habits accordingly.
