The news that Chennai schools are exploring various ways of assessing their students has been the subject of discussion for many now.

It must be taken into account that schools use fun apps to administer quizzes and the schools also use short tests administered through online platforms. From the month of June, many private schools have started their online classes and assessments have become an integral part.

Dean and director of PSBB Schools, Sheela Rajendra expressed her views regarding the assessment of school students. She explained how to zoom has been used for conducting a mix of tests and how short spot tests in the live online classes have been used for basic formative assessment.

She highlighted that the spot tests would assess whether a student has understood what was taught in the online classes. By this, the teachers would be able to get an idea about the effectiveness of their online teaching methods. There would be more focus on learning than the marks.

The truth is there is no pressure on the school students regarding these assessments. For a better understanding of the concepts, the students would also frame questions based on the lessons taught.

According to the principal of Vikas Mantra Public School, Priyanka Ghosh, it was clear that the teachers have become invigilators virtually with the students using their laptops or electronic devices. She then explained how for short tests the students were shown each question and the students wrote answers on a sheet of paper and later emailed the teachers.

The online tests were conducted by their teacher plus by another faculty member. Information is the assessments are restricted to 25 marks or below in most schools. There were multiple-choice questions for the initial round of tests but for the next round, there would be 2 marks, 3 marks plus 4 marks questions also.
