The state government of Tamil Nadu has introduced board examinations for the students studying in plus 1 is known to us. As per the latest information it is now clear that as many as 28,167 students who have flunked in the March 2018 examinations were forced out of their government and private schools. Those students who have cleared the examinations with just pass marks were given transfer certificates.

The important piece of information gathered was when compared to the previous year the enrolment of the students in plus 1 declined steeply this year after the introduction of board examinations for plus 1 by the government of TN. Students have shown disinterest to join maths-biology group and as a result of that there has been a decline of 20% in that group. The students belonging to plus 1 were allowed to write arrears in plus 2. While comparing the school wise candidates list appearing for plus 2 in March 2019 appeared in plus1, the DGE or directorate of government examinations have found out the above truth. On Thursday, 27th December 2018, a circular was issued by the DGE and it instructed the schools to allow all these students as regular candidates and allow them to write both plus 1 arrears and plus 2 examinations.

As per D. Vasundaradevi, DGE, students would find it difficult to appear for subjects with practical exams in plus 2. The circular also stated that to safeguard the interests of the students the schools must readmit the students and allow the students to write the exams as regular candidates. The government order or GO pointed out that the schools cannot detain the students of plus 1 if they fail in their board examinations. The students would be allowed to write arrear examinations while writing plus 2 just like what the college students do.

The shocking piece of news is out of a total of 8.47 lakh candidates who appeared for the plus 1 board examinations around 79,000 students could not clear the exams. It is highly surprising to mention here that the government schools also gave transfer certificates to those who failed in the board examinations of plus 1.The sources have revealed that out of 28000 students more than 5000 students were from government schools in TN. It was from the science group that majority of the students flunked. It has been brought out that the directorate would not allow private candidates for the science stream. The difficulties regarding plus 1 board examinations were proved by the fact that out of 91 % who have cleared the first board examinations for plus 1 in March 2018 just 3.3% scored above 80% and less than 1% got above 90%.
