40 percent passengers opt for the train travel insurance scheme in 25 hours

During the presentation of the Railway Budget, it had been announced that train travel insurance scheme would be proposed. As per this, the train passengers who book their tickets online should pay an amount of 92 Paise as a premium. If any accident occurs during the booked travel resulting in loss of life, the dead passenger’s family will be given Rs. 10 Lakhs as compensation.

If any organs are lost due to the accident during the travel, Rs. 7.5 Lakhs will be paid as compensation. For the passengers who are injured, Rs. 2 Lakh will be paid for the medical expenses.

An amount of up to Rs. 10000/- will be paid for taking the dead body of the passenger to the native place.

IRCTC is implementing this travel insurance scheme jointly with ICICI Lombard, Royal Sundaram, and Sriram.

This travel insurance scheme was launched at 2.45 PM on 1st September (Thursday).

Within 25 hours of the commencement of this insurance scheme, 222605 persons (40 percent) out of the 532703 persons who booked tickets online opted for the travel insurance by paying 92 Paise as an insurance premium along with the train fare.

A senior official from IRCTC explained that this travel insurance scheme would be beneficial to the train passengers as well as the Railways. All passengers except foreigners and children under 5 years of age will benefit from this scheme.However, this insurance scheme will not be applicable to the suburban train passengers. The passengers booking tickets online can pay the additional 92 Paise as an insurance premium along with the train fare and avail this benefit.
