Apple Inc. has indicated that it plans to set up a flagship Apple Store in India on lines of its famous store on Fifth Avenue in New York. It will also set ip a string of smaller outlets. Sources say that real estate brokerage companies are already scouting for space of 15000 to 20000 sq. ft. on high streets and malls.
Say industry experts, Brokerage firms are looking for prime retail locations in Mumbai, the National Capital Region, Bengaluru and Pune for Apple`s first phase of company-owned stores. The company wants to set up most of the Apple Stores of over 2,000-3,000 sq. ft. in India, including space for technical support and holding small workshops.
Closely following Apple is Samsung, who has also started negotiating for prime locations. Samsung has also indicated that it wants to set up similar smartphone stores of over 2,000 sq. ft. Their current stores are around 1000 sq.ft.
Say the experts, While Samsung runs its smartphone brand stores under the franchisee model, the company is directly involved in the revamp of the outlets, which includes new fixtures and design and more space for tablets and wearables. According to the CEO of a leading mall in Delhi, The retail war between Apple and Samsung will further intensify, since getting prime location is a problem which both of these brands will soon realise, considering not all space owners may show interest since these are low-margin products.
