The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has announced that German language will be taught in Kendriya Vidyalala Schools of the Central Government. Complying with the National Education policy, the government has arrived at this decision. It is added that student studying in Kendriya Vidyalala Schools will be free to choose German as their preferred language.
In the intermediate classes of Kendriya Vidyalaya, a trilingual policy is being followed. As per this, English stands as the first language, and the Regional language will be second language and the third will be Sanskrit or other modern Indian language.
Considering job opportunities in overseas nations, the earlier governance decided to teach any one foreign language to the children. As per this move, Sankrit which prevailed as the third language got replaced with any foreign language. This came into effect during the academic year 2011-12.
Out of 1092 Kendriya Vidyalala schools, more than 500 schools chose to teach German language. In these schools, more than 70,000 children learnt German. It is to be noted that the government has joined hands with the Max Muller Bhavan for teaching German in these schools.
Smriti Irani, the Minister of Human Resource Development then decided to replace German with Sanskrit again in November last year. This however received opposition from all corners. The German Prime Minister insisted Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi not to quit teaching German. Amidst these, the German PM has come to India and met Modi. The two got into 18 key agreements out of which German will be taught in Kendriya Vidyalala schools in India. Furthermore, they concluded to teach advanced Indian languages will be taught in Germany.
