The Tamil Nadu government has reduced the qualifying marks for the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) by 5%, as per a government order issued on Wednesday (January 28) by the School Education Department.
The TET is mandatory for Secondary Grade Teachers and Graduate Teachers teaching classes 1 to 8 in government and aided schools. The examination carries a total of 150 marks. Earlier, candidates from the General category were required to score 60% (90 marks), while reserved category candidates needed 55% (82 marks) to qualify.
Following the model adopted by states such as Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha, the Tamil Nadu government has now revised the qualifying marks. As per the new norms:
General category: 60% (90 marks)
BC, BC-Muslim, MBC, DNC, and Persons with Disabilities: 50% (75 marks)
SC and ST candidates: 40% (60 marks)
The government order, issued by School Education Department Principal Secretary P. Sandaramohan, stated that this 5% reduction in qualifying marks will also apply retrospectively to the TET examination conducted in November. The move is expected to benefit thousands of teacher aspirants across the State.
